Active shooter: how to behave during an assault in the workplace

Situations with an active attacker are among the most serious crisis scenarios a workplace can encounter. Although they are rare in the Czech environment, their impacts are so serious that they cannot be ignored.

The key factor for survival in such a situation is not physical strength, but

preparedness, rapid response, and the ability to maintain basic procedures. This article summarizes how to behave responsibly and safely in the event of an assault in the workplace.

Why is it worth talking about this topic?

Most people tend to dismiss such scenarios as “something that can’t happen to us.” But practice shows that crisis situations often come unexpectedly and without warning. Preparedness doesn’t mean fear – it means the ability to react when the normal regime fails.

Employees who know the basic principles of behavior have a significantly higher chance of minimizing the risk to themselves and those around them.

First reaction: time plays a key role

When a serious security incident occurs, minutes – sometimes seconds – matter. The most common mistake is underestimating the situation or waiting for confirmation of information.

The basic rule is: if there is reasonable suspicion of a serious threat, act immediately.

Escape as a priority, if possible

If the situation allows, the safest option is to leave the area and move away from the source of danger. Evacuation should be carried out calmly, without unnecessary noise and, if possible, away from main communication routes.

After leaving the building, it is important to:

  • to move away to safety,

  • contact emergency services,

  • follow their instructions.

Shelter and risk mitigation

If it is not possible to safely leave the area, it is necessary to reduce the risk of detection. The point is not to "hide perfectly", but to buy time and avoid direct contact.

In such a situation it is important:

  • stay still and minimize movement,

  • provide space as much as possible,

  • not to expose oneself to unnecessary risk,

  • monitor the development of the situation only from a safe position.

Communication and calling for help

As soon as it is safe to do so, it is necessary to contact emergency services and provide basic information. At the same time, it is true that information can be distorted in a crisis situation - so it is important to communicate only verified facts

and follow the instructions of the integrated rescue system components.

Not spreading panic is as important as the response itself.

Role of employees and management

In such a serious situation, there is no room for improvisation. Companies should have:

  • clearly defined crisis procedures,

  • trained employees,

  • designated responsible persons.

Employees should know that their main task is to protect their own life and health , not to resolve the incident.

What happens after the situation is resolved?

After the crisis situation has passed, it is necessary to ensure not only physical but also psychological support for employees. Even those who were not directly threatened may suffer the consequences of stress.

Part of a responsible approach is:

  • incident evaluation,

  • modification of security procedures,

  • open communication with employees.

Prevention as the most effective protection

The most effective defense against serious incidents is prevention. This includes training, crisis scenarios, clear communication, and a workplace safety culture.

Preparedness does not guarantee that an incident will not happen – but it significantly increases the chance that its consequences will be as minimal as possible.

Conclusion

Situations with an active attacker are among the most extreme crisis scenarios. That is why it is important to approach them rationally, without emotions and without unnecessary dramatization.

Knowing the basic principles of behavior, reacting calmly and respecting procedures can make the difference in a critical moment. Workplace safety does not begin at the moment of a crisis – it begins long before it.
